MEET: LEEN ALMAHDI

BIO

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and I represent the commuter population on campus. I am currently a freshman pursuing a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. Ever since I was 14 years old, it has been my goal to enter the nutrition field and attend CSULB! I strive to become a registered dietitian and work on a community level to help people struggling with eating disorders. In my last couple years of high school I became extremely involved in school organizations and leadership. I was the president of MSA, vice-president for the environmental healing club, and helped organize and facilitate many school events like the anti-hate rally and removal of invasive species in the local Santa Monica mountains. When I first got accepted into CSULB I was very impressed with the many activities that went on in the school and found out ASI was responsible of the positive changes that have occurred throughout the years. This inspired me to contribute my skills and leadership to ASI in hopes of facilitating change.

PLATFORM

My name is Leen Almahdi, and I am majoring in Pre-Nutrition and Dietetics. Health, and especially human nutrition has always been a passion of mine and my goal is to help marginalized minority students, like myself, become aware and self-conscious of their own health since they are often given no direct attention. I would also like to make resources more accessible for students; the food pantry, free tutoring, counseling, and peer nutrition advising are just some of the many resources on campus that help preserve students' mental, physical, and emotional health and should be more promoted. As a member of a minority group, I think it is extremely important to play an active role in student government and aid with decision making to ensure that students get their voices and concerns acknowledged and heard. I have been involved in various organizations on campus including the MSA, SDA, and served as a senator for the spring 2017 term.

PROJECTS

My main objectives for the upcoming academic school year are to address the following issues: research, advertisement of resources, and sustainability. I would like more advertisement to be done for the many educational opportunities and resources offered on campus, as this could help struggling students graduate on time. For many, research is a vital extracurricular that allows students to gain in-depth knowledge acquired from hands on experience. It is necessary for all students, transfer of not, to have the opportunity to participate in research and I will work hard to ensure that all students interested in research have the opportunity to do so. Many of the buildings on campus are outdated or have facility management issues like tiles falling or non-functioning heating and cooling systems. This is not only dangerous but also hinders students’ academic performances and should be addressed as soon as possible. I would also like to work on improving the quality of food items on campus and require vendors to label GMO products, or eliminate them off the menus altogether. Lastly, it is extremely import for a campus as large as ours to make efforts to become a sustainable campus and install more solar panels across campus to improve the overall health of our planet.
